“I don’t want my photos to look posed”, is a phrase I hear all the time. Enter lifestyle photography. A lifestyle photography session documents real life milestones, moments, and events and gives you images that are anything but posed. Lifestyle photography photos tell your story just as it is at that precise moment and are perfect for any genre of photography. Action driven details bring your images to life over and over again. In this post: Lifestyle Photography Sessions Explained…

So what are some of the situations where lifestyle photography can be used?

Lifestyle Photography Sessions Explained

Kids Photography

fun family photography by denise williams photographyPINIMAGE

Lifestyle photography is the ideal way to capture the beauty and authenticity of childhood. Make sure your children are well rested and that they’re comfortable in both their clothing and their surroundings. Patience is key during this type of session but this is when the magic happens. Bringing along a favorite snack, toy, or book won’t hurt either.

Believe it or not, the most successful photos often happen when we let the kids lead the session. It’s all about making it a magical and spirited time where there is lots to take in. Sitting back and capturing those honest moments will ensure beautiful images that you’ll love for decades. You will always remember the memory that goes along with the photos.

Newborn Photography

Lifestyle photography naturally lends itself to newborn photo sessions. True to life, crib and bassinet shots taken through the slats make for stunning photos. Then there are of course the shots with mom, dad, brothers, sisters, and even the family pet. Moments that may seem mundane now such as bathing, feeding or even changing a diaper, from a distance of course, make for creative shots that you’ll love for years to come. Playing with and rocking your baby are also moments that you definitely won’t regret taking the time to capture as it gives you fond memories to look back on in the months to come as your baby grows and their routine changes.

There is nothing quite like having the family together. The laughing, games, meals, and memories are truly something to treasure. A lifestyle photography session is the perfect excuse to get your family together and capture different generations spending quality time with each other. Why not shoot a family lunch or time spent playing outside in the garden? Capturing moments between siblings or grandparents and grandchildren are photos you can treasure for years to come.

Now that you have had lifestyle photography sessions explained, ask yourself, what do you prefer? The next time you are planning your session with your photographer, really consider what will mean the most to you down the road. Posed photos? Or photos of your family living life? I love a little of both as you can see HERE. Call me if you are ready to capture your family having fun! 913.725.8133

Do you have a photo of you and your mom that you just cherish?

I do and it’s the one below.

mom and me sessionsPINIMAGE

I would die if I lost it.

If it means that much to me now, I can’t imagine how much it will mean down the road.

Realizing this ignites a passion in me. I want to help you, as a mom, (or someone who knows a mom or has a mom) to acquire beautiful imagery of you and your children.

I’ve always heard, “people over possessions”. But in this case, it’s not that black and white.

Photos with YOU are possessions that will be priceless to your kids one day.

You may have already thought of five reasons why now is not the right time for pictures.

Sister, stop it.

No time is ever going to seem like the perfect time.

It. Is. Worth. Doing. Period.

It is, and I hope you believe that.

I will help you by making it super easy…

The Who I Am Project is one of my favorite photography projects to work on because of the impact is has on tweens. This project involves tweens, ages ten to twelve, and is designed to boost confidence in who they are at this tricky stage in life. You can read more about this project HERE.  The centerpiece of this project is the WHO I AM Project Inspiration Album and it’s one of my favorite products!

The WHO I AM Project Inspiration Album

It is a given that I set out to capture beautiful imagery to build up these tweens, but more important are the words they are hearing about their character and accomplishments.

the who i am inspiration albumPINIMAGE

I send questionnaires to important people in their lives, such as parents, grandparents, and teachers. They answer questions and tell stories about the tween. All of this is a secret. The tween doesn’t know any of this is going on!

After the session, I take quotations from the questionnaires and insert them in a slideshow to highlight what was already captured in the images.

The best part is when they see the slideshow for the first time. The quotes are such a surprise!

The next best part is creating and delivering that Who I Am Project inspiration album I was talking about above.

The Who I Am Project Inspiration Album is something they will refer back to time and time again. They can read all the wonderful things the people in their lives have said about them. When they are older, they can look back and remember who they were at this pivotal time in life.

I absolutely love the vendor I use to print the WHO I AM Inspiration Album. They do a fabulous job and each book I receive is of outstanding quality. (color, design, construction).

The photos that a photographer hands over to you are part of their life’s work. It has their name or branding so there are a few important restrictions to note when it comes to the professional digital images that you receive. Below is a brief guide to professional photo restrictions.

fun family photography in kansas city by denise williams photographyPINIMAGE

A Brief Guide to Professional Photo Restrictions

1) Copyright. The digital images that your photographer provides you with have a copyright, which means the photographer has ownership over the images.  As part of the contract you may sign, you may also sign a model release so the photographer can use those photos to market their work and services in the future. However, most photographers are also respectful of their clients, so if there are any images that you would prefer to keep private, it’s best to let you photographer know ahead of time so your wishes can be honored.

2) Image type. Most photographers aren’t willing to provide you with the original raw images. The jpg files you receive have usually been cropped and edited to the photographers brand and style. If you do require further touch ups there is usually an additional charge.

3) Image altering. While photographers appreciate your business and welcome the sharing of photos on social media platforms, most contracts will establish that the images not be altered in any way. This is against copyright policies. A photographer works hard to develop their style and brand an the minute someone alters the photos, it is not in alignment with that style/brand anymore.

a brief guide to professional photo restrictionsPINIMAGE

What constitutes image altering?

• Adding filters or editing photos in Photoshop
• Removing a logo or studio name
• Color correcting or including transitions from color to black and white
• Clipping people or objects out of the original shot by cropping.

Why do photographers restrict? The images a photographer creates are a representation of their work, so when a customer alters an image it directly impacts the business name and brand in the industry. The results are not always reflective of the original work. When final images are presented, they have already been through a unique editing process and don’t require further alterations.

Any photographer would greatly appreciate your loyalty and cooperation in this matter. Usually most photographers are happy to give a quote if you want images to be edited in a specific way or if you want further alterations made.

Tip: Before hiring a photographer, take a good look at their portfolio and make sure their style is in alignment with yours. This way, you won’t have to worry about wanting to change anything.

I hope a brief guide to professional photo restrictions has been helpful!
