We’ve all been in front of camera, especially in this day and age of the smart phone. However, with so many photos being taken these days, we are bound to grumble at how we look in at least a few of them. Unfortunately, we are our own worst critics. If you’ve recently looked at a photo with disdain then this post’s for you. If you know that you’re going to have a lens pointed in your direction in the near future, below are 6 Ways to Always Look Fantastic in Photos

6 Ways to Always Look Fantastic in Photos

  1. Get to Know Your Face. This applies to professional photo sessions as well as everyday photos. Take time getting to know your face: how to smile naturally and which side or angle of your face you like better.
  2. Easy on the makeup. While an evening out is a different story, when it comes to makeup in photos, go easy. If you’re having headshots, family, or maternity photos taken, take it easy on make up application. You want some basic coverage but don’t overdo it. You want to look natural and like yourself. Try accentuating one part of your face by choosing either your eyes or lips but not both.
  3. Facing the camera. Your photographer will help you when it comes to posing for photos but in general you shouldn’t be facing the camera head on. Positioning your body at an angle always makes for better photos.
  4. Controlling your chin. Photos where your neck is elongated and your chin is pushed slightly forward will lift your face and give it a more angular look. You might want to practice this beforehand in order to get used to it.
  5. Pick your outfit carefully. Put some thought into what you’ll wear to your shoot. Pair bold designs and patterns with solid colors to avoid too much distraction. Also consider if the colors you are choosing will blend in with the environment in which you will display the photos. You should also pay attention to the fit and shape of your outfit. Make sure it compliments you and that you feel comfortable. Have someone else take a camera photo snapshot of you to see how you like the outfit.
  6. Use lighting to your advantage. This is something that your professional photographer will be an expert at but the right lighting can mean the difference between that wow factor and disappointment. Avoid standing directly under a light as this will create weird shadows on your face. If you are taking the photo, find diffused light. (under a shelter, close to a winder, under a porch). Because your photographer is an expert at lighting, you’ll want to take their advice when they suggest a specific time for photos. If shooting outdoors, the best light will be early in the morning and close to sunset. Unless it’s an overcast day, your photographer will always try to get you in full shade so that the lighting isn’t dappled or causing weird shadows on your face.

As you embark on the journey of finding a family photographer, there is a lot you’ll want to consider. If you are checking out a photographer you have never worked with before, you’ll need to be thinking about a lot more than just how much it costs. Be sure to set your family up for a great experience by finding out all you can first. Here’s 6 questions you should be asking your photographer.

6 questions you should be asking your photographerPINIMAGE

6 Questions You Should Be Asking Your Photographer

  1. How long have you been a photographer? The longer a photographer has been in business, the more likely it is that it’s not just a hobby for them.
  2. What types of photography do you specialize in? It’s uncommon for a photographer to specialize in several different types of photography as they often only specialize in one or sometimes two genres. For example, a photographer who specializes in newborn photography might not be the best candidate to shoot wedding photos unless they have the experience in doing so. Your best bet is to go with a photographer who specializes in the exact genre you are hiring for.
  3. Do you have many repeat clients? This is a great litmus test of not only the quality of a photographer’s work but of their customer service too.
  4. What is your policy on rescheduling a session? An experienced photographer will definitely have a policy in place when it comes to a customer cancelling or rescheduling a photography session. A photographer with policies indicates that they have experience with different types of customers and situations and have created policies accordingly. This helps sets up the expectation and experience to be positive for all, because everyone is on the same page.
  5. Have you had any experience with (name your specific concern)? If you have any specific concerns regarding your photo session such as the photographer’s ability to work with a special needs child for example, find out if they have ever handled that type of situation before. Do not dismiss a photographer and their abilities based on their answers to your concerns. If given adequate notice, an experienced photographer should be able to accommodate any situation you present them. This is the hallmark of a true pro.
  6. Silent Question: Use your gut to judge their personality and rapport. A photographer’s main job is to capture emotions and moments. If your photographer doesn’t mesh well with you on the phone or in person, chances are you and your family will not mesh well with them at your session and this will show in your photos.

If you have ever wondered what spurs on a photographer’s passion, I am here to tell you! Well, at least from my point of view. Below are 5 reasons why I love what I do and wouldn’t change it for anything at this point in my life!

  1. Photography changes how you see things. I notice colors, textures, flowers, trees, people, shapes and light in a way most people never see them. I pay more attention to the beauty around me. Even the most mundane object can become beautiful when I photograph it in a creative way. I find myself eyeing old, grungy things all the time and admiring them for their textures!
  2. It’s an amazing creative outlet. I get the chance to put a little bit of who I am, along with who my clients are, into each photo that I take. Anyone can click a camera’s buttons, but not everyone can truly make a photo come to life. I love creating that synergy with my creativity and my client’s uniqueness as a family.
  3. It’s a challenge. Creating amazing photos that capture the magic of everyday life doesn’t come without hard work, dedication, and imagination. There is always something new to explore and a new ways to take the same photos. It’s a job that never gets boring and I don’t take it lightly. I want each of my clients to have amazingly unique images, just like their amazingly unique family!
  4. I get to meet new and amazing people all the time. I work with people from all walks of life and love it! I often walk away a changed person from working with families. Getting to know someone new is a part of the process of bringing someone’s personality through in a photo. It also makes the job a lot more fun!
  5. The flexibility is great. Focusing on family is what I do in my business. I document the uniqueness, the fun, the moments that make a family a family. In that same vein, those same things are equally important to me and my family. Being a full time photographer allows me to be flexible with my hours. I am able to do things such as volunteer in my child’s class, which is important to me! I wouldn’t say flexibility equals easy. I am always aiming to perfect my craft, taking on new challenges, learn something new about running a business, and helping my clients achieve treasured heirlooms.

When you decide to pay for a professional photo session with me, know that you are hiring an individual who is passionate about what they do and is willing to go the extra mile to help you create beautiful photos that you and your family can treasure forever. These 5 reasons why I love what I do, are just the tip of the iceberg!
