Fun Family Photography in Kansas City by Denise Williams Photography » Kansas City's Family Photographer

This Overland Park, KS Tween Session was one of the first in my Who I Am Project. I started the “Who I Am” photography project to fill in the forgotten photo years while enriching the lives of pre-teens. The main goal of this project is for pre-teens to realize their inner beauty and be confident in who they are. Having a tween of my own, I am realizing how FAST time is passing and how much she is changing from little girl to young lady.

Overland Park, KS Tween Session: Meet Lindsay

Lindsay is a sweet 11 year old that attends 6th grade in Overland Park.  She likes the color blue, pizza, reading and tap dancing. On weekends she likes to “relax”. I love this photo of Lindsay relaxing on the couch because I feel like you can look into Lindsay’s eyes and see right into her sweet soul.

Lindsay describes herself as happy and that is exactly what I see in her in this photo of her coming off a big twirl. Her mom says, “Lindsay makes friends easily. When she goes to a summer camp, or new class, she always has a new friend by the end of the first day.”

I loved reading the questionnaires that Lindsay’s family, friends, and teacher filled out about her. So neat to learn about a person, then meet them and see those qualities in them. The absolute best part was seeing Lindsay read these quotes for the first time during the viewing of the Session Premiere slideshow. Psst: if you are considering doing one of these tween sessions for your daughter, the questionnaire part is a big secret until the Session Premiere!

Three good things to not live without: animals, books, imagination.

I can see why Lindsay’s grandmother loves her beautiful smile, as seen here in this photo. I saw lots of smiles and laughs during this Overland Park, KS Tween Session!

Last year I had the privilege of capturing Morgan’s brother, Drew, during his senior year at Mill Valley. It was especially neat to photograph him because when I was an elementary school teacher, I taught Drew math. It was so neat to see how he was doing this many years later.

So when his mom called me up this year to schedule Morgan’s senior session I was very excited to work with this family again!

Morgan is a smart, beautiful girl with a lot ahead of her. She also does photography for the Mill Valley High School yearbook, so having that in common was cool!

We headed downtown to the Liberty Memorial for Morgan’s Mill Valley High Senior Session, which is where the first stunning shot of Morgan was taken. Then we explored the Crossroads Arts District. The more I shoot down in these areas, the more I wanna get down there and check it out. There is so much character. I wanna come back and try out the restaurants we kept seeing!

Enjoy a few shots from Morgan’s Mill Valley High Senior Session

There are so many favorites from Morgan’s senior session but I love this one of her sitting in the streets of the Crossroads Arts District.

The Fedt Family and I met down at the Crossroads area of Kansas City for a little fun and something different. Although, the location doesn’t matter when you capture fun and laughter like this. I can do that anywhere! Same goes for outfits or props. Yes, those things do need consideration when planning to take photos, but I think we get too caught up in that. One of my top goals when photographing a family is to capture them having fun and laughing.

I can’t remember what was said in the photo below, but it must have been good.  I just love what this photo depicts. Especially this little guy, who in past years didn’t always love me taking his picture! Don’t their genuine smiles warm your heart? I have a feeling this one will mean a lot to those little ones down the line. The Fedt Family and I had a lot of laughs on this day.

Check out the Fedt Family

Sister and Brother. Such a sweet pair. I think he was whispering little boy humor, which definitely resulted in laughter after!

As we approach busy season for family photos here in Kansas City, I thought I’d do a quick post on what to wear to your photo session. All families are different and have different styles and personalities, so I never dictate exactly what to wear. However, I do give my clients some general guidelines in my Welcome Packet and show them examples of what I think photographs well.

Tips For What to Wear To Your Family Photo Session

  1. Give yourself some time to plan your outfits. Rushing never helped anyone, especially the mama of the family. Happy mama=happy family=great photos! Moms, start with your outfit first.
  2. Ask yourself, do we look good individually AND collectively?
  3. Choose colors and styles that will look good with your home decor.
  4. Take your family’s personality in to account.
  5. Look at the location you will be shooting and make your choices accordingly. (Formal wear by a barn? Maybe not.)
  6. Choose a color family vs. being completely matchy matchy.
  7. Steer clear of too much white, character shirts and shirts with a lot of wording.
  8. Usually mini skirts and short shorts are a bad idea.
  9. Women, consider 3/4 or long sleeves when possible, or light sweaters over tanks in the summer.
  10. Textures and layers are another way to add to your outfit. (Think scarves, jackets, sweaters)

The most important thing is that you and your family members feel great and are comfortable. Remember, I like to have fun with families, which means we get down on the ground and move around a lot with the kids. Check out this DWP family that followed all my photography style tips really well and show how you can pull outfits together and not have to completely match. I think the family below looks fabulous and this classic look settled on will stand the tests of time.

While I mentioned I don’t dictate exactly what to wear, I use these tips to guide my dwp families. Then, if they need visuals, I will point them to other sessions I have done or to Denise Williams Photography Pinterest boards for more ideas.

I hope these style tips help you with your next family photo session. Find more tips to FUN FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHY on this page.
