When I walked in the Dessertery, I was already dreaming of which homemade dessert I’d take home. I’d already enjoyed the decadent Euphoria chocolate cake with peanut butter ganache and it was worth every calorie.
If you know me, you know I love my desserts. I had to snap myself out of it. I wasn’t there to eat this time, I was there to photograph desserts! After my initial trip to the Dessertery, I knew I had to introduce you to Jen Kelly and her wonderful new dessert restaurant located at 5428 Roberts on the west side of Shawnee, KS. So I interviewed Jen and got a behind-the-scenes look at her wonderful creations.
Jen’s dreams came true when she opened her sit-down dessert restaurant on April 2nd of this year. She began seriously making desserts five years ago and was also making them for church and friends. Now you can experience her mouth-watering creations Tuesday through Sunday, and I think you should, right after you read this interview. When you go, take a friend, enjoy some good conversation while your dessert is freshly prepared for you. Good desserts can’t be rushed!
Tell me about some of your dessert or other offerings.
I try to have a wide variety so there is something for everyone and a new dessert every month. June is a Lady Grey and Earl Grey cake pairing and Freckled Lemonade (strawberry lemon) shortcake.
What has been the most popular?
I was really surprised to find out what a following carrot cake has. Ours is served with nuts on the side, a drizzle of house-made caramel, and a side if cardamom ice cream. For a little extra pop in color and flavor I top it with candied carrot and ginger. I once heard my style described perfectly as having a little twist on originals without being pretentious.
Where do you get your inspiration for recipes?
It may sound corny but the only thing I can give credit to for my inspirations is God because I’m just not that creative! It will come to me at the oddest of times, then I’m running to the kitchen to perfect the idea. Most of our staples are family recipes from my mom and grandmom.
What do you want people to know about the Dessertery?
We are a restaurant. Our goal is to provide fresh, beautiful, eclectic desserts so it takes a little time. We frost almost everything when you order. It takes longer than a cake shop or bakery but the difference is noticeable.
Can people order dessert to go?
Most of our desserts can be ordered to go. We aren’t a bakery but an actual restaurant, so if someone is in a hurry I do suggest they call ahead.
Not only are most our cakes available in full size, we also take special orders. I have done several cakes that aren’t on our menu like Red Velevt, German Chocolate, Strawberry and even Boston Cream Pie.
What are your summer hours?
This summer we will be open all day for the first time during the week. Tuesday through Thursday 7am to 10pm. Friday and Saturday, 8am to 11pm. Sundays, 8am to 10pm.
Where is the best place for folks to keep up with what’s going on at The Dessertery?
My facebook page. It’s the easiest to update so it will be the most accurate. As we do more events, it’s easier to keep up with those too.
I’m big into community. I really hope run contest between the local High School culinary programs so that students can show off their skills. Anything that I can do to build community or help the community I like to get involved in. I don’t want to just be a business, I want to be part of the Shawnee Community.
